Engineers from wide ranges of industries face ever increasing needs for complex, realistic models to analyze the most challenging industrial problems; AcuSolve is designed to tackle these finite element-based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations with superior robustness, speed, and accuracy. AcuSolve simulations are designed to carry out on large-scale computational systems effectively. The breakthrough in HPC parallel computing that allows such complex analyses to be performed that generate the high-quality results, while reducing simulation time from days to just hours. Behind this type of computational improvement that makes AcuSolve perform, it involves complex calculations and data exchanges among computational systems. The more complex simulations are being performed, the higher demands from the cluster performance are. In this analysis, the HPC Advisory Council has performed a deep investigation and profiling for the AcuSolve CFD solver to evaluate its performance and scaling capabilities and to explore potential optimizations. This study presents the optimization techniques and networking profiling results to further understand AcuSolve dependencies on the CPUs, communication networks, IO subsystems and the underlying hardware. The paper will review the effects by comparing various hardware using different simulation models.

Identification of Scatter Sources and Significant Reduction of Scatter Occurences with DIFFCRASH

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Dominik Borsotto from Fraunhofer. The investigations described here are related to the unstable behavior of crash-results due to minor changes in the model. To identify and separate these scatter sources the results are analyzed by means of visualizing the standard deviation of scatter itself and computing scatter modes for selected parts of interest. For illustration a realistic application case based on the freely available Chrysler Neon Model (RADIOSS) is analyzed by means of stability of crash results.

Influence of Discrete Inductance Curves on the Simulation of Round Rotor Generator Using Coupled Circuit Method

This paper presents a study on the influence of the discretisation of the inductance curves on a detailed coupled circuit model of a synchronous generator with a damper winding and search coils. The self and mutual inductances of all coupled circuit are computed in magnetostatic with a 2D finite-element method (FEM) for different rotor positions.

High Performance Computing Speeds-up Optimization Processes for Tailor Rolled Blanks at Mubea

OEMs and suppliers include every possible technique to support lightweighting in the automotive industry. It is common to use optimization techniques in order to identify and tab existing lightweight potentials as well as design tailor rolled components in a vehicle, the design optimization of which is normally based on crash simulations. Due to the large size of these simulations, a single run can take 1 to 12 hours. To conduct all the simulation runs needed for assessment and evaluation of different design concepts, the use of HPC is necessary. HWUL- VA was able to reduce the turnaround time for a lightweight study significantly at Mubea.

Some swear to the detailed modelling with every little detail – totally impractical with long weldseams. Some others like the idea to keep it simple, like FEMFAT users, who describe the seam by coincident nodes of two shell meshes.

An Aerodynamic Study of Bicycle Wheel Performance Using CFD

A methodology is presented to apply CFD to study air flow around a rotating bicycle wheel in contact with the ground. The bicycle wheel studied here is an accurate geometrical representation of a commercial racing wheel (Zipp 404). Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) and Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) results are computed at a range of speeds and yaw angles commonly encountered by cyclists. Drag and side (or lift) forces are resolved and compare favorably to experimental results obtained from wind tunnel tests. Vertical forces acting on a rotating bicycle wheel are presented for the first time. A unique transition from downward to upward acting force is observed as the yaw angle is increased. Flow structures are identified and compared for different yaw angles. It is expected that a more complete comprehension of these results will lead to improvements in the performance and handling characteristics of bicycle racing wheels used by professional cyclists and triathletes.

Step Change in Design: Exploring Sixty Stent Design Variations Over Night

Traditionally, computer analysis has been used to verify the structural performance of a proposed stent design. The stent deployment process consists of multiple stages (e.g. crimping, springback, expansion etc.) which is highly non-linear inducing material plasticity and load transfer via component contact. A single structural verification assessment would require a couple of days to compute on a PC. This paper investigates how recent developments in Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and computer hardware combine to facilitate the rapid exploration of many stent design variations. It is demonstrated that by utilising these technologies, over sixty stent design variables can be assessed overnight provides valuable design sensitivity information and an optimum stent geometry configuration. On an example baseline geometry considered the radial stiffness was significantly enhanced with an improvement in structural performance. This represents a step change in the CAE assessment of a stent design.

Lead Time Reduction using Automatic Reporting Director (ARD) for MAHLE

Mahle is one of the top automotive suppliers and one of the top 3 piston suppliers worldwide. With the recent advancements in numerical simulation and computing power, the FEA process has become a major tool to look at the reliability of different design variants. With these advancements, the reporting aspect remained a relatively unchanged process of manually creating pictures and tables with all of the different results. This presentation will look at the collaboration work between Mahle and the Altair Product Development (PD) team to customize the Automatic Reporting Director (ARD) for Mahle's requirements. The goal was to use to better utilize the engineers time by automatically generating a report with standard formats, pictures, and tables. By using the ARD tool, Mahle was able to reduce the lead time for a report from over 4 hours down to less than 1 hour.

PBS Professional at AMET: Harnessing A New High Performance Cluster

HyperView Automation for Post-Processing Cell Phone Drop Simulations

The cell phone design cycle within Motorola has matured to the extent that it is standard operating procedure to analyze several concepts of a specific model before physical parts are ever made. With the use of HyperWorks tools and the speed of current compute systems, pre-processing and number-crunching are no longer the bottlenecks in analyzing full assemblies during drop situations. The most time-consuming part of the analysis cycle for drop simulations has become post-processing. It is common in the analysis cycle to look at the results of 10 or more drop orientations for each concept. Each cell phone assembly is large enough that it manually takes a half- to a full day — depending on the drop orientation — to look at all the parts of interest. By teaming with Altair, HyperView has been customized to automatically produce a web-based report for a drop orientation in about 45 minutes. The report can be accessed by any member of the design team and provides a much quicker method for focusing on the critical components that need attention.

HyperWorks Helps Create Accurate Finite-Element Models from CT Scans of Artificial Knee Joints

Using Altair HyperMesh, the HyperWorks finite-element (FE) pre-processor, researchers at the University of Applied Sciences in Amberg-Weiden, Germany, created an efficient process to create FE meshes of an artificial knee joint from supplied computed tomography (CT) scans. The team, led by Professor Franz Magerl, deployed HyperMesh’s re-meshing capabilities to convert STL data to a high fidelity tetrahedral-based FE model and investigated the effect of imperfections induced by the manufacturing process on part strength.
