Altair NVH Solutions - Americas ATC 2015 Workshop

This Workshop Presentation on NVH was conducted by Jianmin Guan at the Americas ATC on May 5, 2015. This workshop introduced Altair full frequency and multi-physics solutions for solving the most pressing problems in the NVH field. It provided an overview of Altair’s solutions designed to facilitate the best in class NVH design process at automotive OEMs, coupled with real-time demonstrations of key product features. Stamping Process Integration of Composites in Crash Analysis

This was a 2013 European ATC presentation given by Cécile DEMAIN from Solvay Engineering Plastics. Thermoplastic composites (TPC) developed by Solvay Engineering plastics are composites based on polyamide 6 or 6.6 as a matrix and can be reinforced with glass fibers or carbon fibers. The two main interests vs. TPC. thermosetting composites are cycle time and recyclability. The development of TPC PA66 or short fiber hybrid structures / TPC PA66 is today's challenge.

High Performance Catamaran Design & Optimisation with HyperWorks

Team Rafale is regrouping aerospace engineers, as well as faculty members and students from ETS (Ecole de Technologie Superieure, in Montreal, Canada), who have taken on the ambitious challenge to design, build and race a C-Class catamaran in The Little Cup. F.tech R&D North America

F.tech R&D North America utilizes HyperView to investigate test results, using the data to inform decisions on methods to improve designs. This data will often be used to create reports and presentations during the development process, using images and animations generated by HyperView to illustrate particular areas of a component where additional work may be required. However, exporting these assets is a highly manual process of loading in results, positioning the model and taking screenshots. To allow its engineers to concentrate efforts on exploring and interpreting the results, F.tech R&D North America wanted a way of automating this process.

Multibody Analysis of a Vending Machine

The aim of analysis was to analyze and optimize a cam in order to reduce the friction a acceleration peaks. A rigid MB model in Motion view was generated with contacts. The automotive and aviation industry is in need for simulation tools that allow them to analyze structural and occupant performance concurrently with increased predictability in occupant injuries. By harmonizing RADIOSS and MADYMO, both codes in a single simulation offers the best of both worlds. Traditional RADIOSS-MADYMO coupling model was generated and validated to the crash test. Occupant response data from HIII Q MADYMO model was compared to the test data. Acceptable level of correlation was achieved.

Chassis structure optimization for improvement of roll rate characteristics of a heavy truck

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Greg Kiselis from Volvo Truck. Bending and twisting of the chassis structure of a heavy truck can degrade the roll performance of the vehicle as a whole. Various suspension types can load the chassis structure in different manners thus effecting the contribution of chassis stiffness to the overall roll characteristics of the vehicle. In this presentation you will see how a study was performed with MotionView, MotionSolve and HyperStudy to understand the effects of key variables of the chassis structure as affected by different suspension types.

CDTire: State-of-the-Art Tire Models For Full Vehicle Simulation

CDTire is a family of sophisticated tire models capable of accurately representing the dynamic behavior of tires and the road-tire interaction. Modeling and Analysis of the Battery Packs and Modules in A123 Systems

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Shawn Zhang & Binshan Ye from A123 Systems. In A123 Systems, CAE/FEA tools are widely used to improve the efficiency of the design on battery packs and modules. A123 engineers utilize Altair’s HyperWork Suite for structural FEA including linear and nonlinear statics analysis, modal frequency and random vibration analysis, as well as nonlinear dynamic analysis such as mechanical shock and drop test analysis.

Multi-physics with MotionSolve

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Keshav Sundaresh & Rajiv Rampalli from Altair. Due to its system level focus, multi-body simulation is a natural environment for integrating the different technologies together. MotionSolve is an Industry proven multi-body simulation tool that provides a logical environment to integrate different technologies and solve the combined problem. This presentation discusses three topics: (a) The need for multi-disciplinary simulations and strategies for combining models; (b) Simulating real world phenomena using MotionSolve; (c) Case studies illustrating how customers have successfully used MotionSolve to solve multi-physics problems.

RADIOSS FSI at NASA Langley: Water Impact of 20 inch Sphere

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Antoine Segnegon from Altair on behalf of NASA Langley. In 2011, NASA Langley completed the construction of a Hydro Impact Basin next to an existing gantry which allows testing of articles for water impact with both horizontal and vertical velocities. NASA Langley engineers use simulation in conjunction with the new testing facilities to evaluate water landings for space vehicles.

COUSTYX Fast Multipole Acoustics

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Rajendra Gunda from ANSOL. Traditional Boundary Element Methods (BEM) for acoustic analysis have difficulty with large models and are thus limited to analysis of small bodies at low frequencies. Integration of the Fast Multipole Method (FMM) with BEM formulations in Coustyx results in vastly superior performance. In this presentation as a HyperWorks Alliance Partner, several automotive applications will highlight the computational speed and accuracy of Coustyx predictions.

Risk Analysis of Tubing Design: Integrating DOE and Stochastic Study into Design Optimization

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Guijun Deng from Baker Hughes. In this presentation, a new design approach is presented: risk analysis of tubing design through integrating design of experiment (DOE) and stochastic study into design optimization. Application of the new approach using Altair HyperStudy will be illustrated by a design example involving a tubing design for a high pressure/ high temperature well, where both material properties and geometry are treated as randomized design variables. This process avoids over-conservative design and, therefore, excessive cost.

Nonlinear Gap Analysis Using RADIOSS

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Amandeep Singh from Bombardier Transportation. In this paper, the contact analysis using RADIOSS CGAP is presented, and a methodology is presented to use CGAP in linear analysis using results from non-linear analysis. The RADIOSS CGAP element is efficient in simulating contact offering fast convergence, default setting of many parameters and robust analysis.

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Roger Assaker from eXstream. This presentation highlights Multi-Scale Modeling of Reinforced Plastic Parts with Digimat to RADIOSS.


This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Dr Wei Li from FTSS. FTSS, in collaboration with the Altair, has developed an express H350 dummy model. The developed model generates 50% - 80% saving in the CPU time in variety of full dummy simulation scenarios and produces injury predictions of comparative quality. This presentation reviews the details of the dummy model development and illustrates a performance evaluation of the dummy model.

HyperMesh and HyperView customization for thermal analysis of engine systems

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Emil Chouinard from GE Aviation. GE Aircraft Engines has many NPI (new product initiative) programs that rely on accurate and timely thermal analysis, as temperatures are critical to accurate estimates of hardware life. HyperMesh and HyperView have been customized as the pre and post processing tools, respectively, for thermal analysis of engine systems. The single database with relational data management greatly reduces modeling errors and results in Engineers being able to focus on the physics of the problem instead of data management.

Multi Body Dynamics Simulation and Test Correlation of a Glove Box Mechanism using Motion Solve

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Arun Chickmenahalli from International Automotive Components Group. This presentation describes how IAC with the use of multi-body dynamic (MBD) simulations using MotionSolve software has made it possible to study the system and assess feasibility. At IAC, MotionSolve has been implemented and incorporated into the product development cycle to enhance the design efficiency, reduce cost and lead time.

Increasing the Customer Value of Structural Designs Using HyperStudy and Topology Optimization While Considering Manufacturing Constraints

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Steve Reagan from L&L Products. In the demanding environment seen in today's markets, continual innovations driving increasing levels of customer value are key. The use of topology optimization with the inclusion of manufacturing constraints was critical to the achievement seen in this project and was made possible through the close product/process integration available through the HyperWorks tool suite. In this presentation, Dr. Reagan shows how HPC, RADIOSS, HyperStudy, and OptiStruct were employed to drive material cost down while maintaining product performance.

MAHLE's Switch to HyperWorks

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Scott Janowiak from Mahle. Recently in the auto industry, there has been a high demand for smaller, lighter, and more efficient engines. The piston and connecting rod have a major impact on the performance of an engine; therefore optimizing these parts is essential. With the help of HyperMesh, advantages for meshing were noticed immediately. HyperMesh allowed Mahle to increase the mesh quality by using tools which helped increase mesh speed and efficiency.

Radiator Test-Rig Multi-body Simulation - A Benchmark Study

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Girish Mantri from Modine. Modine has been working with Altair Engineering to evaluate Altair Multi-Body Dynamics suite. A Flexible Multi-Body Simulation of a Radiator single axis test rig is carried out to identify the von-mises stresses at critical parts in the assembly. The forces coming onto the connectors (bushings) and the stresses are compared between 2 solvers to check consistency in results. In this presentation, Modine discusses the overall efforts and result correlation between Altair MotionSolve and ADAMS solver.

Migration ADAMS - HyperWorks

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Magnus Olofsson from NAVISTAR. NAVISTAR has been working with Altair Engineering to evaluate HyperWorks as an alternative to ADAMS/Car. NAVISTAR has been evaluating the HyperWorks user interface as well as the performance of Altair MotionSolve. NAVISTAR has been benchmarking Altair MotionSolve against ADAMS/Car on several key attributes such as Accuracy, Functionality/Compatibility, Robustness and Performance. In this presentation, NAVISTAR talks about the migration effort and some of the benchmark results.

Engineering Trade-off between Performance Enhancement and Weight Reduction For Gear Housing Using Mathematical Optimization

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Bruce Hansen from Sikorsky. The rotorcraft industry today faces a growing challenge of finding the right trade-offs between weight/cost savings and performance enhancement. In order to meet this challenge, designers and analysts are increasingly applying innovative mathematical structural optimization techniques for designing different categories of rotorcraft components and systems. This presentation will show how real-life trade-off challenges were navigated with assistance from optimization methods available in OptiStruct.

Performance Improvement of Recently Updated RADIOSS FE Dummy Models

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Nishant Balwan from Humanetics. With both versions of full FE dummy model and simplified “express” dummy model being introduced to vehicle design applications, the need to improve dummy models predictability is sought by taking into account of accuracy, cpu cost, and efficiency. The Hybrid-III family dummy models have been updated according to users input and application needs. This paper presents the latest modifications and performance improvement of H305 and H350 dummy models on component level as well as full dummy assembly level.

Improve Packaging Performance Using Simulation

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Dante Sanchez Rojas from Mabe. This presentations shows how Mabe used HyperMesh, HyperCrash, RADIOSS, HyperView, and OptiStruct to improve and validate packaging performance in early stages of the product development process.

Development of Tools to Streamline the Analysis of Turbo-Machinery

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Tom Lincoln from Cooper Standard. Cooper Standard partnered with Altair to create a tool in AcuSolve to speed the set-up of centrifugal pump CFD analyses. This tool steps the engineer through the selection of the components to the pump and then automatically identifies and meshes the surfaces in the model.

Speed and safety : composite materials in Motorsport

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Luca Pignacca from Dallara Automobili. This presentation gives an insight of what safety criteria govern the design and the manufacturing of modern racing cars , such as Formula 1 and Indycars, and will show how good engineering can be used to reduce the risk of fatalities for racing drivers. It will also explain the challenges which Dallara and Altair will face in the near future to develop new tools for the dynamic structural analysis of carbon composites structures.

Finite Element Modeling and Testing of Aerospace Seats under Crash Conditions

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Benjamin Walke from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. In an effort to enhance and supplement structural testing methods, specifically crash analysis, a simplified yet accurate FEA modeling method is developed to better understand a design performance during physical testing. A critical area of performance is crash test analysis. The modeling method was based upon crash conditions referenced from FAR 25.562 as well as physical test methods for crash analysis. The crash modeling utilizes HyperMesh, HyperCrash, and LS-DYNA so as to offer insight into structural performance.

CFD and More with Acusolve and HyperWorks

This was a training presentation given at the 2012 Americas HTC. This presentation focuses on the use of HyperWorks tools for CFD applications. Basic topics involve the meshing and set-up of a simple fluid flow application. Advanced topics focus on the set-up, simulation, and post-processing of multi-physics applications.

Student Team H2polit0 of Politecnico of Torino Applied HyperWorks to Reduce Vehicle Weight and Fuel Consumption on Shell Eco Marathon Europe Competition

Student teams from around the world participate in the Shell Eco-marathon (SEM), a unique low energy consumption competition for student teams. Within the competition the teams strive to design, build and drive the most energy-efficient car. In three annual events in Asia, Americas, and Europe, student teams compete on the track to see who goes furthest on the least amount of fuel. The competition evaluates different aspects of the car, the most important of which is of course the energy consumption: the less energy the car needs, the better it will rank.

Advance Electromangnetic Simulations and their Applications in Oil & Gas Industry

Advances in computational electromagnetic tools have made electromagnetic (EM) simulations possible for various applications. Now numerical simulations can be performed to evaluate the effects of antenna design, placement, radiation hazard, EMC/EMI, etc. for wide ranging industry applications. Numerical approaches that include full wave techniques such as Method of Moments (MoM), Multilevel Fast Multipole Method (MLFMM) and asymptotic techniques such as Physical Optics (PO) and Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD) are being utilized to solve many challenging problems that were not possible in the past.

[AB]structures Relies on HyperWorks in Developing Three Record Breaking Round the World Racing Yachts

[AB]structures, an Italian structural design and engineering company, used the CAE suite HyperWorks first for the Volvo Ocean Race in 2006 to design the yacht for the ABN AMRO White team and has used it since then successfully for several other Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup yachts. This year [AB]structures used HyperWorks to structurally design and optimize three VO70 Round The World Racing Yachts for the 2011 – 2012 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. This included the yacht Groupama 4, skippered by Franck Cammas, which claimed victory on July 9, 2012 in Galway, Ireland, after 9 months and more than 37,000 nautical miles sailed around the world under the harshest conditions.

Moldex3D, Structural Analysis, and HyperStudy Integrated in HyperWorks Platform

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Dr. Anthony Yang from CoreTech Systems. In recent years, with the increasing variety, complexity, and precision requirement on plastic products, CAE tools have been widely used for solving product design and manufacturing issues. The structural designs or molding process parameters for products can be optimized efficiently through CAE analyses. However, sometimes it is not efficient to find an optimized set of parameters through traditional CAE analyses. A novel integration between Moldex3D and HyperStudy allows for more quick and efficient parameter optimization which will save time, increase product quality, and increase productivity.

Optimization of a Family of Supporting Frames Under Multiple Analysis Constraints Using HyperStudy

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Dr. Yimin Zhan from Van-Rob Kirchhoff Automotive. Numerous valuable engineering experiences have been gained at Van-Rob Kirchhoff to improve the design of automotive structures during the product development process. Conventional design activities need constant information exchange between FEA and design activities, through an iterative process, which leads to increased time and manpower consumption. Efforts to enhance the efficiency of such a process and to reduce the product development cycle become a challenge. This presentation will demonstrate the significant role of HyperStudy that Van-Rob Kirchhoff used in the optimization design of a family of supporting frame assemblies under multiple analysis constraints.

Application of a Novel Metal Folding Technology for Automotive BiW Design

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Prathamesh Marathe from Clemson ICAR. A long-term initiative at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) is a project called "Deep Orange", which immerses students in the world of a future OEM and supplier. As part of the 3rd Deep Orange vehicle project, it was decided to engineer, build, and showcase the load bearing structure of the Body-in-White (BiW) based on a novel technology of sheet metal folding developed by Industrial Origami. The Altair toolbox containing HyperMesh in combination with the RADIOSS linear solver was applied to conduct the functional analyses and bring the BiW structure on target.

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Gilad Shainer & Todd Wilde from the HPC Advisory Council. AcuSolve is a leading general-purpose finite element-based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) flow solver with superior robustness, speed, and accuracy. AcuSolve simulations are typically carried out on HPC systems. The HPC Advisory Council has performed a deep investigation and profiling for AcuSolve to understand its performance and scaling capabilities and to explore potential optimizations. This paper presents the optimization techniques and networking profiling results to further understand AcuSolve dependencies on the network and the MPI library, and options for future optimizations using MPI offloads.

<b>Developing the World’s First Series Hydraulic Hybrid Bus</b><br><br> The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) requires modern transit bus systems to provide more efficient services across America. Currently, U.S. public bus transit authorities are subsidized to meet operating budgets with State and local subsidies exceeding $19 billion per year and Federal subsidies exceed $7 billion per year. The goal of the BUSolutions project is to design and manufacturer a new bus with improved fuel economy, lower emissions and a lower life cycle cost than today’s buses.

Cooper Standard Speeds Development of Next-Generation Pumps with Altair’s AcuSolve CFD Solver

With more than 22,000 employees in 19 countries, Cooper Standard supplies the vehicle industry with fluid delivery systems, sealing and exterior systems, thermal and emission systems and AVS. The company’s Electromechanical Department is an advanced research and development arm of the Cooper Standard North America division. It’s goal is to marry mechanical systems with electronic controls. This new technology improves overall vehicle efficiency by providing on-demand fluid delivery and by eliminating the power loses inherent in conventional systems. In designing new pumps for this type of system, CAE Engineer Tom Lincoln uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to simulate the flow of coolant through the device. He and his team began using CFD computer-aided engineering tools as long ago as 2003, and computer simulations have become an essential part of his organization’s product development process.
