Model Verification Director

Altair's Model Verification Director (MVD) allows engineering analysts to validate CAD model data received from the design teams, automatically identifying potential issues that could slow down the pre-processing stage of the simulation life cycle. The MVD is embedded into HyperWorks pre-processing technology, HyperMesh and integrated into the Assembly Browser. The solution identifies CAD intersections, missing welds, and incorrect bolt-nut positions on an entire assembly structure and generates comprehensive reports in both Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel formats to allow for easy communication of the validation results. With this insight, the CAD design team can correct the model data and help streamline the finite element modeling process.

Targeting Composite Wing Performance – Optimum Location of Laminate Boundaries

This paper investigates the application of newly available optimization functionality available in OptiStruct to provide design guidance to generate innovative laminate composite solutions. Due to the flexibility of laminate composites, it has great potential to exhibit displacement characteristics that could significantly increase the aerodynamic performance. Free element sizing technology is used to determine concept lay-up solutions. These solutions determine the laminate make-up, thickness and the various laminate boundaries of an aircraft wing covers under multiple loading conditions which meet the required displacement targets whilst also minimising mass. These preliminary studies demonstrate that the technology can successfully achieve displacement targets for multiple load cases. Each analysis study can be completed within minutes and consequently can be utilised as a valuable concept design tool.

FIAT

FIAT chose Altair ProductDesign as a partner to perform a pilot project to investigate squeak and rattle. HyperForm Improves Accuracy and Robustness of Tool Design and Manufacturing Process at Summit Auto Body (SAB) Leveraging HyperForm’s sheet metal forming solution, SAB designed the validation process and press tool design covering the vital areas of virtual prototyping/testing, which, in turn, reduced the time-consuming manual process drastically.

Application of Optimisation Tools to the Design of Advanced Carbon Fibre Bicycle: FACTOR 001

FACTOR 001 is the result of a creative project by BERU f1systems to explore the transfer of design approaches, technology and materials from Formula One to a groundbreaking training bicycle. The design brief did not require the bicycle to comply with existing technical regulations, which resulted in great freedom during the design process. This paper details how OptiStruct Optimisation tools were used to help generate efficient lightweight solutions for the design of complex carbon fibre components. Free-size optimisation was used to generate laminate boundaries, ply thicknesses and fibre directions, which met stress and displacement requirements. Physical testing carried out on manufactured parts highlighted the accuracy of the FE models and demonstrated the advantages of incorporating OptiStruct Optimisation tools in the design process.

Seat Design for Crash in the Cloud - NAFEMS World Congress 2015

The benefit of design exploration and optimization is understood and accepted by engineers but the required intensive computational resources have been a challenge for their adoption into the design process. The HyperWorks Unlimited (HWUL) appliance provides an effective solution to these challenges as it seamlessly connects all the necessary tools together in the cloud. The aim of this study is to showcase the benefits of HWUL on an optimization driven design of a complex system. For this purpose an automotive seat design for crash loadcases is selected.

DECKED

The huge capacity of a pickup comes at the expense of storage. The loading area is often a simple box with no ability to store smaller items safely or secure them from theft. After spotting an opportunity in the marketplace, entrepreneur, Lance Meller, started work on a well-built alternative. Lance founded DECKED with his business partner, Jake Peters, with a shared determination to create an innovative, robust and useful storage solution for both commercial users and private owners alike. The system had to be able to withstand a load of 2,000 lbs, fit it into a wide range of pickup models including those from Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota and Nissan and be manufactured for a compelling retail target price. DECKED selected Altair ProductDesign as it needed a partner that was able to deliver conceptual design work along with advanced engineering and prototyping services.

The Use of Suimulation (FEKO) to Investigate Antenna Performance on Mobile Platforms

Wireless technologies have proliferated onto automotive platforms as part of infotainment, telematics and active safety initiatives. These wireless solutions present engineers design challenges in the area of applied electromagnetics in terms of antenna design, antenna placement, electromagnetic compatibility and wave propagation. The Applied EMAG and Wireless Lab at Oakland University possesses an outdoor vehicle-level antenna range (80 MHz - 6,000 MHz) and full-wave electromagnetic field solvers with high end computers to solve these issues. This presentation will highlight some of the past and recent research projects conducted in my lab that relied on a full-wave electromagnetic field solver to investigate the issue and subsequently be validated with measurements.

Injecting Innovation in Performance Engine Design with Altair HyperWorks

MAHLE Powertrain outsourced model generation of large complex parts such as heads and blocks to low cost countries to ensure sufficient mesh quality could be produced for their automotive engine designs. The third party’s improved capabilities proved valuable but ultimately MAHLE Powertrain wished to bring the process back in-house to maintain control and reduce external expenditure. To achieve this a new pre and post-processing solution was needed. HyperWorks was selected as the new platform as it afforded the required increase in productivity through its automatic mesh creation and batch processes.

Mahle Discuss Its Use Of The Automated Reporting Director

A close collaboration was forged between MAHLE and Altair ProductDesign to create the automated reporting solution. While Altair ProductDesign developed the code, MAHLE described the current process and reporting requirements to ensure business alignment and an effective result. Previously, users had to create a HyperView session, adjust all the pictures, snap a picture of each desired view, bring the visual assets into PowerPoint, crop and place, go back and create call-outs, and re-examine results to create notes for the report; this is now a push button operation. Using ARD, MAHLE has successfully reduced time spent on non-engineering tasks, enabling CAE analysts to better utilize their time as engineers - yielding more analysis and better design.

In the study, Altair benchmarked RADIOSS using a modified crash simulation model on a single-node platform -- RADIOSS was able to easily take advantage of all 60 cores, running the workload 2.75X faster than on a comparable 24-core platform.

Renault

An Innovative Approach to Lighter and More Efficient Powertrains

Carmakers the world over are investing heavily in the development of lighter vehicles and more economical engines that can go further on less fuel. Renault’s powertrain division wanted to further decrease the weight and increase the performance of existing and in-devolopment engines by redesigning key components to use a minimum amount of material. As an existing user of Altair’s simulation solutions, Renault approached Altair ProductDesign to assist in the development of the required optimization design methods and processes for use at component and sub-system levels.

Cabin Comfort - Analyze Airflows and Thermal Effects

It is cost prohibitive to rely on climatic wind tunnel tests in the initial vehicle HVAC system design process. Additionally, the passenger compartment airflow and thermal environment is one in a state of constant change requiring use of transient CFD simulations. In this 45-minutes complimentary session, we will give an overview of Altair’s CFD solution to simulate the airflow in the passenger compartment and include all relevant thermal effects such as convection, conduction and radiation heat transfer in the cabin. The geometry model of the vehicle interior is based on an Altair-developed generic cabin model. This geometry is used to demonstrate the model build and execution process including how to automate the model build process.

Integrated Durability Analysis

Durability analysis in vehicle design usually consists of multiple simulation disciplines, such as simple linear stress, fatigue or nonlinear deformation simulations. Many development organizations use a number of different tools to understand the overall system response. This session will demonstrate how the entire durability simulation process can be integrated and accelerated using HyperWorks modeling, visualization and process automation solutions.

The view this recording you must have the WebEx Player installed.
