Altair's Model Verification Director (MVD) allows engineering analysts to validate CAD model data received from the design teams, automatically identifying potential issues that could slow down the pre-processing stage of the simulation life cycle. The MVD is embedded into HyperWorks pre-processing technology, HyperMesh and integrated into the Assembly Browser. Application of Optimisation Tools to the Design of Advanced Carbon Fibre Bicycle: FACTOR 001

FACTOR 001 is the result of a creative project by BERU f1systems to explore the transfer of design approaches, technology and materials from Formula One to a groundbreaking training bicycle. The design brief did not require the bicycle to comply with existing technical regulations, which resulted in great freedom during the design process. This paper details how OptiStruct Optimisation tools were used to help generate efficient lightweight solutions for the design of complex carbon fibre components. Free-size optimisation was used to generate laminate boundaries, ply thicknesses and fibre directions, which met stress and displacement requirements. Physical testing carried out on manufactured parts highlighted the accuracy of the FE models and demonstrated the advantages of incorporating OptiStruct Optimisation tools in the design process.

Targeting Composite Wing Performance – Optimum Location of Laminate Boundaries

This paper investigates the application of newly available optimization functionality available in OptiStruct to provide design guidance to generate innovative laminate composite solutions. Due to the flexibility of laminate composites, it has great potential to exhibit displacement characteristics that could significantly increase the aerodynamic performance. Free element sizing technology is used to determine concept lay-up solutions. These solutions determine the laminate make-up, thickness and the various laminate boundaries of an aircraft wing covers under multiple loading conditions which meet the required displacement targets whilst also minimising mass. These preliminary studies demonstrate that the technology can successfully achieve displacement targets for multiple load cases. Each analysis study can be completed within minutes and consequently can be utilised as a valuable concept design tool.

Safety Comes First – Development of a Maxi-Cosi Child Seat Using a CAE-Driven Design Process

When developing a new child seat, safety is paramount. Dorel Juvenile, market leader in child safety in cars, was confronted with the task to develop a new child seat - the Maxi-Cosi 2wayPearl. To investigate and analyze the best feasible design, considering the occurring forces during an accident, Dorel Juvenile turned to Code Product Solutions, an engineering service provider that supports their customers in the development and optimization of products, using computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools. Within the development process, Code Product Solutions engineers employed the Altair HyperWorks CAE suite utilizing RADIOSS® for crash simulation, OptiStruct® for the layout of highly loaded plastic parts that comprise the reclining system, HyperMesh® for pre-processing tasks, and HyperCrash® and HyperView® during post-processing.

FIAT

FIAT chose Altair ProductDesign as a partner to perform a pilot project to investigate squeak and rattle. The project focused on studying issues on the FIAT UNO, a vehicle made exclusively for the South American market. Altair ProductDesign suggested that FIAT implement Altair’s ‘Squeak & Rattle Director’ (SNRD), a comprehensive set of services and software automations that rapidly identify and analyze design alternatives to eliminate the root causes of squeak and rattle in assemblies. With customization from the Altair ProductDesign team, the solution provides a semi-automated approach to determine relative component displacements in the time domain that can lead to undesired noise. A dedicated four day workshop facilitated a fast ramp-up of the NVH team’s knowledge of the SNRD and helped Altair to identify FIAT’s specific design process that the solution could be tailored to.

Evolutionary Design in Chassis Technology

This paper details the use of the Thyssenkrupp eDICT process for the design of sheet metal chassis components. eDICT (evolutionary design in chassis technology) is an innovative structured process flow for the design of optimal structures. eDICT uses the optimisation capability of Optistruct with a set of custom tools to guide and translate a design into a production feasible sheet metal solution. Fundamentally it reverses the usual design loop of CAD first then CAE assessment. The function is used to determine the design and the form follows. On recent projects eDICT has produced 25% mass reductions compared to the current series design. eDICT is also able to reduce development times and resource with an efficient solution production right from the outset.

Fast Tracking Rail Vehicle Design

Bombardier Transportation UK offers one of the most comprehensive and diverse rail vehicle portfolios in the world. The strategy is one of continuous development that provides the most effective and cost-efficient rail solutions for today and the future. A key ingredient is the use of Altair HyperWorks enterprise computer aided engineering (CAE) solution. Altair's technology is now present at every stage of the design process and has increased the efficiency of the product development process. The paper details how Altair tools have been used to generate Finite Element (FE) models of carbodies, bogies and secondary structures in reduced time scales. Significant weight and cost savings are achieved through structural optimisation of components such as large steel castings, aluminium extrusions and steel fabricated structures which are subjected to linear static, fatigue and abuse loading. Automated post processing facilitates the interpretation of results and the writing of detailed official reports.

Targeting Composite Wing Performance – Optimising the Composite Lay-Up Design

This paper shows how Altair OptiStruct, part of the HyperWorks suite, is used to provide a complete solution when designing with laminated composites, taking the design through concept stages to producing the final ply lay-up sequence. The technology is applied to the design of a laminated wing cover to produce a mass optimised design which meets the requested structural targets.

Altair’s computer-aided engineering (CAE) simulation software platform for simulation-driven innovation is Hyper- Works, which includes modeling, visualization, analysis and optimization technologies and solutions for structural, impact, electromagnetics, thermal, fluid, systems and manufacturing applications. The electromagnetics solver suite in HyperWorks is FEKO, a comprehensive electromagnetic analysis software used to solve a broad range of electromagnetic problems. It includes a set of hybridized solvers, giving the possibility to combine methods to solve complex and electrically large problems, with all solvers included in the same package.

MotionSolve – Altair’s multi-body solution is an integrated solution to analyze and improve mechanical system performance. In the energy industry, MotionSolve is used to simulate wind turbine dynamics systems. An accurate virtual wind turbine can be constructed by considering high-fidelity components, such as aerodynamic loads, wind loads, detailed structural sub-systems and co-simulation with control systems. MotionSolve can be used to predict the loads coming on to the structure, simulate extreme events (such as emergency stop), offshore wind turbine dynamics and extract stress/strain for further durability studies.

The huge capacity of a pickup comes at the expense of storage. The loading area is often a simple box with no ability to store smaller items safely or secure them from theft. After spotting an opportunity in the marketplace, entrepreneur, Lance Meller, started work on a well-built alternative. The Use of Suimulation (FEKO) to Investigate Antenna Performance on Mobile Platforms

Wireless technologies have proliferated onto automotive platforms as part of infotainment, telematics and active safety initiatives. These wireless solutions present engineers design challenges in the area of applied electromagnetics in terms of antenna design, antenna placement, electromagnetic compatibility and wave propagation. The Applied EMAG and Wireless Lab at Oakland University possesses an outdoor vehicle-level antenna range (80 MHz - 6,000 MHz) and full-wave electromagnetic field solvers with high end computers to solve these issues. This presentation will highlight some of the past and recent research projects conducted in my lab that relied on a full-wave electromagnetic field solver to investigate the issue and subsequently be validated with measurements.

Seat Design for Crash in the Cloud - NAFEMS World Congress 2015

The benefit of design exploration and optimization is understood and accepted by engineers but the required intensive computational resources have been a challenge for their adoption into the design process.
