Meshing the Human Lumbar Spine

HyperWorks customer Jeff Harris from NuVasive has used HyperMesh to solid hybrid mesh consecutive human vertebrae and discs from a patient bone scan. The meshing, set up in Hypermesh, is simulated using Ansys for motion limits, stiffness, and disc material correlation. Once a model is correlated, disc implants are modeled and simulated with the goal of replacing degenerate discs.

SELEX Galileo Deployed HyperMesh to Generate Electrically Large Surface Meshes with Dielectric Regions for Radar Cross Section (RCS) or Antenna Placement

This case study describes the process by which HyperMesh was used to generate 100 million mesh elements of a fast jet, with defined electrical properties at the element level. This was destined for use within electromagnetic (EM) solvers to calculate either the RCS of the aircraft, or to determine where to place an antenna for optimum performance. This was the first time that electrical properties could be assigned to models in a GUI environment, and the process has helped SELEX Galileo designers reduce development time in creating large EM models, which will drive down the cost of design activities.<br><br>

Optimisation Techniques Leading the Development of a Steering Wheel

The early application of structural optimisation in the design of automotive components streamlines the design process and at the same time significantly increases the potential of the final design achieving maximum performance. This paper details the use of optimisation techniques during the development of a steering wheel, to generate an optimised design for cross attribute performance. This was completed in the Altair HyperWorks environment as Altair HyperMesh combined with Altair OptiStruct enables the creation of a parametric model with a multitude of design variables (i.e. size, shape, displacement, stress and frequency) in order to satisfy NVH, manufacturability, durability and crash targets.

Fighting Knee Pain with Finite Element Modeling

The Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Research Laboratory at USC, is using HyperWorks to investigate why so many people are incapacitated by knee pain when others are not. This is a tough, intractable issue for people with arthritic knees since there is no cure for arthritis today. Early detection can help and is the focus of USC’s work. (HyperMesh is used to create finite element models to analyze stress on the cartilage of the joint.)

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Nishant Balwan from Humanetics. With both versions of full FE dummy model and simplified “express” dummy model being introduced to vehicle design applications, the need to improve dummy models predictability is sought by taking into account of accuracy, cpu cost, and efficiency. The Hybrid-III family dummy models have been updated according to users input and application needs. This paper presents the latest modifications and performance improvement of H305 and H350 dummy models on component level as well as full dummy assembly level.

Patran to HyperMesh Conversion Self Paced Course

The purpose of this self paced course is to help Patran users in their conversion to HyperMesh. Included in the course are examples to help users get acquainted with HyperMesh and the way that it interacts with the models. Most sections will use the See It, Try It, Do It methodology to cover the concepts. See It allows you to watch a video demonstration of the new feature. Try It allows you to go through an interactive video which will guide you through using the new feature. Do It consists of a written exercise and model that can be opened in HyperMesh which allows you to perform the exercise on your own. Some sections will also contain interactive guides to provide a detailed description of the different options contained within a panel or browser. The sections can be completed in any order, or simply complete the ones that answer your questions.

HyperMesh and Custom Export Template Streamline CFD Analysis in Research Projects at Arizona State University

Integrative Simulations & Computational Fluids Lab researchers from SEMTE (School for Engineering of Matter Transport and Energy) at the Arizona State University (ASU) wanted to use the commercial code HyperMesh as a general preprocessor to mesh complex geometries for use with the spectral element CFD code Nek5000. The challenge was to benefit from the rich functionality of existing meshing tools such as HyperMesh while using the Nek5000 code, since this CFD code requires 3D hexahedral elements. SEMTE researchers set up a project to develop a converter tool with which a HyperMesh mesh could be exported into a format the Nek5000 code could work with. With this export template the overall process is now much more user-friendly and less error-prone. The mesh is generated in HyperMesh and the export template organizes all the data and sorts it so it can be imported in the proper formats into the Nek5000 user template.

Model Browser Enhancements

For a recent ME 471 class, a team of five students re-engineered the chassis/suspension platform for a 1969 Chevrolet Camero. At the conclusion of the project, the team presented a comprehensive review of their re-design vehicle to a panel of PACE program representatives and partners. Key to arriving at an efficient design was the early application of Altair topology optimization to the chassis, suspension, and wheel design of the vehicle. Altair HyperMesh was applied to generate finite element models that formed the basis for the topology optimization studies. The team results showed that  The chassis mass was reduced by 34% through the application of topology optimization. The suspension control arm mass was reduced by 28%. The team was able to apply the Altair HyperWorks simulation tools in a seamless manner with the Catia-based CAD data that was generated for the vehicle re-design.
