<b>A Safer Landing with Water Impact Analysis</b><br><br> Using Altair’s own HyperWorks virtual simulation suite, Altair ProductDesign built an accurate finite element model of the module from CAD data supplied by NASA, as well as a section of water and air which matched the conditions from the lake used during the physical tests. The effect on the module’s structure during impact was simulated to gauge how well the results correlated with the physical tests. The results showed excellent correlation between the simulation and physical tests, identifying areas where the model, input parameters and meshing methods could be improved to give a more accurate prediction of the event.

Radiator Test-Rig Multi-body Simulation - A Benchmark Study

This was a 2010 Americas HTC Presentation given by Girish Mantri from Modine. Modine has been working with Altair Engineering to evaluate Altair Multi-Body Dynamics suite. A Flexible Multi-Body Simulation of a Radiator single axis test rig is carried out to identify the von-mises stresses at critical parts in the assembly. The forces coming onto the connectors (bushings) and the stresses are compared between 2 solvers to check consistency in results. In this presentation, Modine discusses the overall efforts and result correlation between Altair MotionSolve and ADAMS solver.

FEKO Integrated in HyperWorks 14.0

Altair’s computer-aided engineering (CAE) simulation software platform for simulation-driven innovation is Hyper- Works, which includes modeling, visualization, analysis and optimization technologies and solutions for structural, impact, electromagnetics, thermal, fluid, systems and manufacturing applications. The electromagnetics solver suite in HyperWorks is FEKO, a comprehensive electromagnetic analysis software used to solve a broad range of electromagnetic problems. It includes a set of hybridized solvers, giving the possibility to combine methods to solve complex and electrically large problems, with all solvers included in the same package.

Applications of Advanced Composite Simulation and Design Optimization

Usage of fiber reinforced composite material entered an new era when leading aircraft OEMs took an unprecedented step to design and manufacture essentially full composite airframe for commercial airliners. Composite structures offer unmatched design potential as the laminate material properties can be tailored almost continuously throughout the structure. However, this increased design freedom also brings new challenges for the design process and software. Moreover, as a relatively new material, composite behaviors are more complex and less fully understood by design engineers. Therefore, reliable simulation for highly complex events like bird strike and ditching can play an important role in shortening the product design cycle. This paper showcases two area of CAE tools for composite applications. On advanced simulation, bird strike simulation with Altair RADIOSS [1] is demonstrated on an aircraft underbelly fairing. On design optimization, an airplane wing structure is designed using an innovative composite optimization process implemented in Altair OptiStruct [1-3]. OptiStruct has seen increasing adoption among aerospace OEMs, as demonstrated in the Bombardier application process described in this paper.

Tanker Truck Sloshing Simulation Using Bi-directionally Coupled CFD and Multi-Body Dynamics Solvers

RADIOSS FSI at NASA Langley: Water Impact of 20 inch Sphere

This was a 2012 Americas HTC Presentation given by Antoine Segnegon from Altair on behalf of NASA Langley. In 2011, NASA Langley completed the construction of a Hydro Impact Basin next to an existing gantry which allows testing of articles for water impact with both horizontal and vertical velocities. NASA Langley engineers use simulation in conjunction with the new testing facilities to evaluate water landings for space vehicles.

This paper summarizes the findings of a benchmark study with RADIOSS and Intel® Xeon® processors. In the study, Altair benchmarked RADIOSS using a modified crash simulation model on a single-node platform -- RADIOSS was able to easily take advantage of all 60 cores, running the workload 2.75X faster than on a comparable 24-core platform.

The student team of the university of applied sciences in Munich participates in the annual Shell Eco-Marathon. The team has to develop a very light and highly efficient race car within less than a year. As there is no time for prototyping, simulation is mandatory. Advances in EM Simulations

This paper introduces some of the recent extensions to the computational electromagnetics code FEKO as released in Suite 7.0. The FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) method was added to the selection of available solvers. MLFMM (Multilevel Fast Multipole Method) and PO (Physical Optics) were hybridized for electrically large applications. The RL-GO (Ray-Launching Geometrical Optics) solver was extended and improved in terms of speed and accuracy, and a new interface to import measured near-field antenna data from MVG/Starlab will be presented.

Performance Evaluation, Scalability Analysis, and Optimization Tuning of Altair HyperWorks on a Modern HPC Compute Cluster

Engineers from wide ranges of industries face ever increasing needs for complex, realistic models to analyze the most challenging industrial problems; AcuSolve is designed to tackle these finite element-based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations with superior robustness, speed, and accuracy. AcuSolve simulations are designed to carry out on large-scale computational systems effectively. The breakthrough in HPC parallel computing that allows such complex analyses to be performed that generate the high-quality results, while reducing simulation time from days to just hours. Behind this type of computational improvement that makes AcuSolve perform, it involves complex calculations and data exchanges among computational systems. The more complex simulations are being performed, the higher demands from the cluster performance are. In this analysis, the HPC Advisory Council has performed a deep investigation and profiling for the AcuSolve CFD solver to evaluate its performance and scaling capabilities and to explore potential optimizations. This study presents the optimization techniques and networking profiling results to further understand AcuSolve dependencies on the CPUs, communication networks, IO subsystems and the underlying hardware. The paper will review the effects by comparing various hardware using different simulation models.
