HW 2017 delivers improvements throughout the product with emphasis on robustness, handling of large models and automating CAE processes. Modeling large assemblies with hundreds of parts is more efficient. The CATIA reader no longer requires a separate CATIA license. SimLab includes mesh fading. Mesh lines are visible only when zooming in closer to a model. When zoomed out, mesh lines disappear and improve the visual experience.

Global mesh controls apply to features such as fillets and cylinders, reducing the number of required controls. You can still create additional feature mesh controls. Mesh generation for regions with overlapping mesh controls has been improved—improved grid mesh and layer meshing controls result in better mesh flow.

SimLab provides a template to create bearings more efficiently. Welds between two solid parts can be created automatically.

CAD Import

  • CATIA import option no longer needs CATIA license.  

  • JT assembly parts import is improved to allow the import of full vehicle assemblies.

  • Creo 3.0 and NX 11 support.

  • Parasolid v29 support.

Display and Usability

  • User-defined shortcut keys.

  • Shortcut ‘H’ hides and un-hide bodies.

  • Color, material, property and mesh controls are accessible from the model browser.

  • The Cutting Plane functionality has been improved so that a closed plane in parts color can be shown for a section cut on shell models. For solid elements the cutting plane is also shown in parts color.

  • The display of the connectivity between parts is improved. The beginning and end of intersections is marked with green dots. This makes the identification of disconnected regions especially in large assemblies significantly easier.

  • The console windows for reading and meshing geometries have been replaced with a progress bar shown on the bottom of the program window (status bar). Right next to the progress bar is an option to cancel processes.

  • A new mode displays model color according to material, property and features.

Geometry and Assembly

  • Modifications to an existing mesh is more robust. The requirement of matching boundaries is eliminated.

  • Imprinting edges and converting intersections to penetrations is improved significantly. As a result, Boolean operations to connect a large number of parts is quicker, less manual input is required and automation is easier.

Meshing

  • Logo removal mesh control lets you suppress logos during the meshing process.  Previously this has been a manual step after meshing.

  • Multiple layer shell meshing in thin regions is available. Layer meshing for solids has been previously available.

  • Overlapping global, regional and fillet mesh controls are handled more efficiently.

  • Change mesh patterns on multiple faces simultaneously with the Grid Mesh Editing tool. Similarly, you can apply the Change Layers tool to update the number of elements around the circumference of a hole without re-meshing.

  • SimLab automatically identifies and meshes features such as fillets and cylinders without separately creating feature mesh controls.

  • Report generation for Quality Check is supported. Access via scripting is possible as well.

Solver Interface

  • Display and edit large numbers of loads with the Load manager. Other managers are available for Contacts, Convection, Radiation, Pretension, and Sets.

  • While reading Abaqus decks, unsupported cards are stored upon importing and written out upon exporting solver decks.

  • New interface for nanoFluidX offers particle creation for the liquid, gas and solid portions of the model.

    OptiStruct interface offers Random Response, Fatigue and Transient Heat analysis setup.

  • Necessary cards for the Abaqus Modal Frequency Response analysis are implemented.

Special Features

  • New templates help you easily create bearings with balls and rollers.

  • Connect parts with 3D weld model.

  • OptiStruct topology optimization results are supported.

  • 2016 Abaqus .odb result files are supported.

  • Query results at local regions with contour plots.

Automation

  • Python scripting is supported.

  • New script utility functions are available.
